Depth and Diversification:
New Acquisitions from the
Clark Center Collection

September 7 — November 27, 2004

After a one-month summer break, the gallery reopens for its fall season with an intriguing exhibition of newly acquired works of various different media and genres. The traditional Japanese-style gallery space will be filled with an eclectic array of artworks from 17th to 19th century paintings and 20th century prints to ceramics and bamboo baskets. This exhibition will highlight areas of the collection that have seen exciting growth in the past few years in both familiar territory as well as new spheres of interest. Works on view range from classical style works such as the triptych of landscapes with poetic inscriptions by 17th century artist Sumiyoshi Gukei to mid-20th century abstract prints by Takahashi Rikio.

The selection of hanging scrolls and screen paintings includes recent purchases that expand upon the Center’s strong holdings in Edo period painting from the 18th and 19th centuries in the styles of Rimpa, Nanga, Kanō and eclectic artists. Moving into works from the late 19th century, a very large portrait of an Ainu elder is of particular interest and constitutes a focal point of the exhibition. The Center also continues to add spectacular intricately crafted bamboo flower baskets to the collection, enhancing the holdings, which are already considered to be one of the premier collections outside of Japan. A few new baskets will be featured in this exhibition.

Recently, the collection has also made great strides in new areas through the generous gifts of supporters in the local area as well as from collectors throughout the United States and abroad. Through this exhibition, we gratefully acknowledge the gifts of all those supporters who have given gifts of artwork over the past several years.
